Pest control in Moreleta Park

From the lawns of freestanding family homes to shared roofs in townhouse complexes, Moreleta Park throws up a familiar set of pests. Here is what we find, and how we deal with each one.

Most pest calls from Moreleta Park fall into five groups: termites in lawns and walls, rats and mice in roofs, cockroaches in kitchens, ants coming through the paving, and moles lifting the garden. The right treatment depends on which one you have and on what kind of property it is, so every job starts with an inspection rather than a blanket spray.

Why Moreleta Park has the pests it does

This is one of the biggest suburbs in Pretoria East, and it isn't one type of property. The older streets are mostly freestanding houses on decent stands, with established gardens, kikuyu lawns and the odd fruit tree. Between them sit townhouse complexes where units share walls, roof voids and a common garden. On the edges are newer security estates, with young gardens and veld not far away. Running through the area is the Moreleta Spruit, with its strip of grass, reeds and trees.

Each of those settings favours different pests. Big lawns suit harvester termites and moles. Shared roofs let rodents and cockroaches move from unit to unit. The open ground along the spruit gives rats and mosquitoes somewhere to live, and the newer estates on the fringe get more scorpions, spiders and termites coming in from undisturbed ground.

The pests we treat most often here

Termites

Bare patches in a winter lawn usually mean harvester termites. Mud tubes on a wall or inside a cupboard point to subterranean termites, which are a far more serious matter for the house itself. Our page on termite treatment for Moreleta Park homes explains how we tell them apart.

Rats and mice

When the cold sets in, rodents look for warmth. Roof rats climb in along walls and branches, and mice slip under garage doors. We use lockable bait stations, traps and proofing advice. See rodent control in Moreleta Park for the detail.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches are the kitchen problem in complexes, because they travel through shared plumbing and walls. The big American cockroaches come up from drains and manholes in summer. Gel baits in the right places do most of the work, as covered under cockroach control in this suburb.

Ants

Ant trails across the kitchen counter tend to start outside, under paving or along the base of a wall. We use baits the workers carry home, which is the only reliable way to reach the nest. More on that in our Moreleta Park ant service.

Moles

Raised ridges and soft spots in a well-watered lawn are the work of golden moles hunting grubs. Our mole page for the area explains what helps and what doesn't.

The rest of the list

We also treat fleas, bed bugs, fishmoths, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes, wasps, flies, bird mites and pantry pests in the area. If you can't tell what you're looking at, a photo usually settles it.

How the year usually goes

The first summer storms bring out flying termites and push ants indoors. Mid-summer is the season for flies, mosquitoes near the spruit, wasp nests under eaves and American cockroaches from the drains. Autumn is busy for moles. Winter is when harvester termites strip the lawn and rodents move into roofs and garages. One habit worth adopting: walk the garden and look into the roof hatch at the start of May, before winter gets going.

How we work

We inspect first, find out what is feeding and sheltering the pest, then treat the specific problem. Insect treatments are odourless and won't stain, and you don't need to leave home. Children and pets can use treated areas again once they've dried. For complexes and estates we can work with the body corporate on a whole-site plan, and for businesses and schools we offer scheduled monitoring. We've been doing this for 25 years, we're SAPCA registered, and if a treated pest returns within three months, we come back.

A mistake we see a lot

People in complexes often treat their own unit and stop there. With cockroaches and rodents, the neighbours' units are part of the same problem, so a single-unit treatment buys you a few quiet weeks and then it starts again. If several owners are complaining, talk to the managing agent about treating the block together.

What does it cost?

Three things drive the price: which pest, how big the property is, and how long the problem has had to settle in. A one-off ant or cockroach treatment in a townhouse is a small job. Termite work on a freestanding house, or rodent control across a whole complex, is quoted after we've seen the site. For a few ants on the counter, a decent bait from the shop may be all you need, and we'll say so if that's the case.

We work right across Pretoria East, including neighbouring Faerie Glen pest control. To book an inspection in Moreleta Park, call 012 012 5526, or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what it is.

Questions we get asked

Do you cover all of Moreleta Park, including the estates?

Yes. We treat freestanding homes, townhouse complexes and the security estates on the edges of the suburb, and we arrange gate access when we book.

What is the most common pest call from Moreleta Park?

It changes with the season. Termites and ants dominate after the first rains, while rodents and lawn damage from harvester termites lead in winter.

Can you treat a whole townhouse complex at once?

Yes, and for cockroaches and rodents it works much better. We can plan the job with the body corporate or managing agent.

Will we have to move out while you treat?

No, not for normal insect treatments. Keep kids and pets away from treated areas until dry. Only gas fumigation, which is rare in homes, needs the area vacated.

Is living near the Moreleta Spruit a pest risk?

It can be. Homes close to the open ground along the spruit tend to see more rats and mosquitoes, so boundary hygiene and standing water matter more there.

What does your guarantee cover?

Should a treated pest return within three months, we'll be back to deal with it.
