Here's an honest answer to a question we're asked often: there's no such thing as a pest treatment that kills pests and has no effect on anything else. What does exist is a way of working that keeps the impact on your family, your pets and your garden as low as possible. In practice that means inspecting before treating, fixing the cause, using baits and targeted treatments instead of broad spraying, and only using a product where it's actually needed. That's how we've approached pest control in Pretoria and Centurion for 25 years.
What "eco-friendly" should mean
If a company promises a completely natural, chemical-free treatment that will clear a serious cockroach, termite or rodent problem, be sceptical. Some home remedies help a little with minor problems, but registered products exist for a reason. The real environmental difference comes from how much is used, where it goes and whether it was needed at all. A tiny amount of gel bait placed inside a crack where cockroaches live is a very different thing from fogging an entire house.
The principles we work by
1. Inspection before anything else
Most of the pest problems we see have a cause we can remove: a gap under a door, a leaking pipe, a compost heap, an overflowing bin area, a creeper growing up to the roof. Find and fix that and you need less treatment, sometimes none.
2. Prevention and proofing
Sealing entry points is the most environmentally friendly pest control there is. Closing gaps around pipes, fitting door seals and covering air bricks keeps rodents and insects out without any product at all.
3. Baits instead of blanket sprays
For cockroaches we use gel baits placed in the cracks where they hide. For ants we use baits that the workers carry back to the nest, which deals with the colony using a fraction of the product a spray would need. Both keep treatment out of open living areas.
4. Secure rodent control
Loose rat poison is a real risk to dogs, cats and wildlife such as owls and other birds of prey that eat rodents. We use lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations placed where rodents travel, and traps where bait isn't suitable, for example inside the roof. 5. Targeted, not general
Where a residual spray is needed, we use odourless, non-staining products and apply them where the pest actually lives or travels: along a foundation, around a door threshold, inside a wall void. Wasp nests are treated at the nest. Harvester termites are treated at the active holes in the lawn, not across the whole garden.
Why this matters in Pretoria
Many Pretoria gardens are full of life worth protecting: birds, chameleons, lizards, bees on flowering plants and owls hunting at night. Homes near nature reserves, ridges and spruits, such as those around the Faerie Glen reserve, share their gardens with more wildlife than most. Broad-spectrum spraying across a garden affects all of it, and often doesn't even solve the problem. A targeted approach gets better results and leaves the garden ecosystem largely alone.
What you can do yourself
- Keep food sealed, bins closed and dishes washed at night.
- Fix leaks; many insects are drawn by moisture.
- Keep mulch and soil back from the walls of the house.
- Clear standing water to cut mosquito breeding.
- Pick up fallen fruit and spilt bird seed to keep rodents down.
- Seal gaps where pipes and cables enter the house.
These steps alone solve a surprising number of minor problems, and they make any professional treatment more effective and longer-lasting.
A common misunderstanding
People sometimes assume that the gentlest option is to keep trying home remedies for months. With a growing cockroach or bed bug problem, that often means far more treatment in the end, because the population gets bigger while you wait. Acting early with a small, targeted treatment is usually the lower-impact choice.
Safety during treatment
For normal insect treatments, nobody needs to move out. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry. If fumigation is ever needed, which is rare and mostly for specific commercial or wood pest situations, the sealed area must be vacated until it's been cleared. We'll explain exactly what we're using, where and why.
What does it cost?
A targeted, inspection-led approach doesn't usually cost more, and it can cost less because you're not paying for treatment where it isn't needed. Prices depend on the pest, the size of the property and how established the problem is. If a problem can be fixed with proofing or better storage, we'll tell you.

Questions we get asked
Is there truly chemical-free pest control?
For prevention, yes: proofing, hygiene and removing food and water. For an established infestation, registered products are usually needed, but they can be used in very small, targeted amounts.
Is gel bait safer than spraying?
For cockroaches it's usually both safer and more effective, because a small amount is placed inside cracks where cockroaches hide, away from open surfaces.
Will your treatments harm the birds in my garden?
We avoid broad garden spraying and use lockable bait stations for rodents, which keeps the risk to birds and other wildlife low.
Do I have to leave the house for an eco-friendly treatment?
No, not for normal insect treatments. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry.
Do home remedies work for pests?
Some help with very small problems, such as ants on a counter. They rarely clear an established infestation, and waiting can let the problem grow.
What is the most eco-friendly way to stop rats?
Remove food and cover, seal entry points and, if needed, use traps or lockable bait stations rather than loose poison.
