Pest control in Woodhill

A newer home in a golf estate isn't pest-proof. In Woodhill, the problems simply arrive from the garden and the open ground rather than from old timber.

Woodhill homes rarely have the rotten roof timbers or crumbling air bricks of an older suburb, so what we get called for is different. Ants marching in along paving and irrigation lines, harvester termites eating well-kept lawns, paper wasps building under high double-storey eaves, and spiders around windows and outside lights. These are mostly outside-in problems, and the trick is stopping them at the edge of the house.

What a golf estate in Pretoria East brings

Woodhill is a golf estate in Pretoria East. Fairways, open ground and carefully watered gardens surround most homes. That green space feeds insects and the animals that eat them. New construction also disturbs the soil, and termites and ants recolonise it quickly once the builders leave. So a house that's a few years old can have a busier garden than a house in an established suburb.

Ants: the most common call

Ants in Woodhill kitchens almost always come from nests under paving, along garden edging or in the soil beside the slab. They follow irrigation pipes and cable runs and get in at door frames, sliding doors and plug points. Spraying the line you see just pushes the colony to find a new route. We use baits the workers carry back to the nest, and treat entry points around the outside. If you'd like to understand the method, our ant treatments in Moreleta Park and surrounds explain it in more detail.

Harvester termites in a manicured lawn

Bare, sandy patches appearing in winter, with small holes and loose soil and cut blades of grass nearby, point to harvester termites. They don't touch the house. They do undo a lot of work on the lawn. treatment goes into the live holes, where foragers take it below ground to the nest. If you're seeing mud tubes on walls or damaged wood instead, that's a subterranean termite issue, and we look at termite control on the Moreleta Park side for that.

Wasps on high eaves

Double-storey homes with deep roof overhangs, pergolas and covered patios give paper wasps plenty of sheltered places to build. Nests start small in spring and grow through summer, and a nest above a patio door or next to a child's bedroom window is a sting waiting to happen. We treat and remove nests directly, including high ones you'd need a ladder to reach. Our page on removing wasp nests in Moreleta Park covers what to expect.

Spiders and night insects

Outside lights draw moths and beetles, and spiders follow the food. Corners of windows, garage door tracks and the underside of patio furniture fill up with webs in summer. A residual treatment around the outside of the house, combined with switching to warmer-coloured outside bulbs, reduces both. Rain spiders and other large hunters turning up indoors are mostly harmless; we'll identify anything you're unsure of.

What new-home owners get wrong

Many people assume a new house was treated for termites during building and is therefore protected for good. Pre-construction soil treatments do wear off, and paving, new flowerbeds, a swimming pool or an extension can break the treated layer. It's worth an inspection a few years in, especially if you've done garden or building work.

A practical Woodhill tip

Look at where your irrigation sprays. Sprinklers that wet the walls and the soil right against the slab create the moist conditions ants and termites like best. Turning heads away from the house and keeping a narrow strip of gravel or paving between the lawn and the wall makes a real difference.

How we work in the estate

We book a time with you and arrange access at the gate. We inspect before treating, explain what we found, and use odourless, non-staining products. You can stay at home during treatment. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry. Every treatment carries our 3-month guarantee: if the same pest comes back within three months, so do we.

What does it cost?

The cost depends on what we're treating and how much of the property is involved. A single wasp nest or an ant problem is a small job. A lawn treatment depends on the size of the affected area. A full outside perimeter treatment depends on the size of the house. We'll quote once we've seen it, and if a hardware-store ant bait would do the job, we'll say so.

Questions we get asked

My house is new. Why do I have so many ants?

Building work disturbs the soil, and ant colonies move back quickly. Irrigated gardens and paving give them nesting sites right against the house.

Can you reach wasp nests on a double-storey roof?

Yes. We treat and remove nests under high eaves, gables and patio roofs, so you don't need to go up a ladder.

Was my Woodhill home treated for termites when it was built?

Most new homes get a soil treatment during construction, but it doesn't last forever and later building or garden work can break it. An inspection will tell you where you stand.

Will an ant bait harm my dog?

We place ant baits where pets can't easily reach them and use small amounts. Keep pets away from any treated surfaces until they're dry.

Do I need to tell the estate before you treat?

You need to log us in through the gate. Most treatments don't need estate approval, but we follow any rules your estate has for contractors.

Can you treat harvester termites in winter?

Yes, and that's often the best time. Harvester termites are most active in dry weather, so treating the active holes then gets the product to the colony.
