The fastest way to get rid of cockroaches is to identify the species and treat where they live, not where you see them. In Centurion that usually means one of two things: German cockroaches breeding inside kitchen units and appliances, or American cockroaches coming up from drains and sewer lines. One needs gel baiting inside the home; the other needs attention on the drains and the outside of the building.
The small kitchen cockroach
German cockroaches are light brown, about the length of a fingernail, with two dark stripes behind the head. They don't live outdoors on the Highveld. They live inside, in warm, tight spaces near food and water: behind the fridge motor, inside the dishwasher door, under the sink, in the hinges of kitchen cupboards and inside the microwave.
In Centurion they're mostly a complex and flat problem. They arrive in grocery boxes, second-hand appliances or a neighbour's moving boxes, then spread between units through shared plumbing and electrical ducts. A sighting during the day usually means the population is already large.
The big drain cockroach
American cockroaches are much larger, reddish-brown and able to fly short distances on warm summer nights. They live in sewers, manholes and stormwater drains, and come into houses through floor drains, gaps around pipes and dry traps in unused bathrooms. Restaurants, food outlets and office parks with large drainage networks see them often, and so do homes in older streets where the drain covers are cracked or missing.
Signs of an infestation
- Tiny black specks like ground pepper in cupboard corners and hinges
- Brown egg cases tucked behind appliances or in drawers
- A musty, oily smell in cupboards with heavy activity
- Cockroaches scattering when you switch the kitchen light on at night
- Shed skins under the sink or fridge
What we do
For German cockroaches we use gel baits, placed as small dots exactly where they shelter: hinges, behind kickplates, appliance housings, cracks along the counter. Cockroaches eat the bait and carry it back to their hiding places, where others pick it up. Where it's needed, we add a residual treatment to cracks and voids. Follow-up visits matter, because eggs inside the cases aren't affected and hatch afterwards.
For American cockroaches we treat drains, manholes, plumbing entry points and the outside perimeter with odourless, non-staining residual products, and advise on sealing gaps and keeping drain traps filled.
For restaurants and food businesses, a scheduled monitoring contract keeps activity under control with regular inspections and records.
Office kitchens and shared staff areas
Centurion's office parks have a cockroach problem of their own. Staff kitchenettes with a kettle, a microwave, a fridge full of forgotten lunches and a dishwasher that runs once a day are ideal for German cockroaches, and nobody owns the problem. Vending machines and coffee machines are common hiding places because the motors stay warm. We bait these areas out of hours and, where a building has several tenants, can treat the shared kitchens and refuse rooms as one job so the cockroaches don't simply move to the next floor.
The mistake that makes it worse
Spraying supermarket aerosols around the kitchen while baits are down. The spray contaminates the bait so cockroaches avoid it, and it scatters them into new areas, including the neighbour's unit. If you've had gel baiting done, don't spray or deep-clean the treated cracks for the period we advise.
A Centurion tip
If you're in a complex and you find German cockroaches in a unit you've just moved into, check the appliances that came with it. A dishwasher or fridge that's been in a heavily infested kitchen can carry eggs. Tell the body corporate too. Treating the neighbouring units on the same plumbing line at the same time is the only reliable way to stop reinfestation in shared buildings.
What does it cost?
A single kitchen with a light German cockroach problem is a small job; heavy infestations need more bait and at least one follow-up. Treating drains and perimeters for American cockroaches depends on the size of the property and how many drain points there are. Restaurants and multi-unit buildings are quoted to the site. A cockroach or two coming in from the garden in summer doesn't always need a treatment at all.
Cockroaches and flies are often found together in food areas, so a business may also want fly control in Centurion. See cockroach control for Pretoria for the full species guide, our Waterkloof cockroach treatments, or the Centurion pest overview.
Being SAPCA registered matters in food premises, and every job carries our 3-month guarantee: cockroaches back in a treated area within that period get treated again. Call 012 012 5526 to book, or WhatsApp us a picture of the cockroach so we can identify it first.
Questions we get asked
Why do I see cockroaches even though my kitchen is clean?
German cockroaches need very little food and live inside appliances and cupboard hinges. A clean kitchen helps, but it won't clear an established population on its own.
Can cockroaches spread from my neighbour's flat?
Yes. They travel through shared plumbing, electrical ducts and gaps around pipes, which is why treating neighbouring units together works best.
Is gel bait safe around children?
Gel bait is applied in tiny amounts inside cracks, hinges and voids, out of reach and out of sight. It isn't sprayed onto open surfaces.
Why are there more cockroaches after the treatment?
For a few days you may see more, because the bait affects them and draws them into the open. Numbers should fall clearly after that.
Where do big cockroaches in the bathroom come from?
Usually from the drains. Keep floor drain and basin traps filled with water, fit drain covers, and seal gaps where pipes enter the wall.
Do restaurants need a monthly service?
Food businesses usually do best on a scheduled contract. How often we visit depends on the size of the kitchen and the level of risk.
