Pest control in Irene

Irene's historic village sits among farmland and open ground between Pretoria and Centurion. That country setting decides which pests turn up at the back door.

Irene feels more like a country village than a suburb, and its pests reflect that. Rodents coming in from the open land as the weather cools, moles working through lawns, subterranean termites in older homes, and flies in summer are the problems we see most. If you've moved to Irene from a denser suburb, expect a bit more of the outdoors to try to come inside.

A village surrounded by open land

Irene is a historic village with a farm and open land around it, between Pretoria and Centurion. Some homes are older, with timber and decades of garden; others are newer estate homes on the edges. What links them is the open ground nearby. Fields, grassland and farm activity support healthy populations of mice, rats, insects and moles, and the closer a home is to that land, the more pressure it faces.

Mice and rats from the fields

Field mice and rats breed in grassland and around farm buildings through summer. When autumn comes and the grass dries out, they move towards warmth and food: garages, storerooms, roof spaces and kitchens. Small droppings in cupboards, chewed bags and noise in the ceiling are the usual signs. We use lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations along the outside of the property, traps indoors where they're safer, and look for the gaps rodents use. Rodent control in Centurion and Irene explains how we work.

Moles in village gardens

Golden moles are common in Irene's soft, watered gardens. They tunnel just below the surface for grubs and worms, leaving raised ridges and soft spots in lawns and beds. Mole hills and tunnels can make a lawn feel spongy underfoot. Treating moles works best when it's done properly the first time. See our mole control around Centurion for the method.

Termites in older homes

Older Irene houses often have timber floors, wooden frames and big garden beds against the walls, which suits subterranean termites. They build mud tubes from the soil to reach wood and can work unseen for a long time. Look for mud tubes on walls, hollow-sounding skirting boards and blistered paint. We inspect, find the route in and treat with registered soil treatments or baiting. In the lawn, bare patches with small holes point to harvester termites, which are treated differently. Our termite treatment in Centurion covers both.

Flies in summer

Farm activity, compost heaps and animals nearby mean more flies in the hot months. Most come from breeding sites close to the house: compost, pet waste, bins and rotting fruit. Clearing those and treating the places flies rest around doors and windows reduces them a great deal. More detail is on our fly control page for Centurion.

Other pests worth mentioning

Wasps build under eaves and in outbuildings in summer. Spiders and the odd scorpion shelter in wood piles and old brick stacks. Ants follow irrigation lines into kitchens. All are treated with targeted methods rather than a blanket spray.

What people commonly get wrong

Waiting until winter to deal with rodents. By June, mice and rats are already established in roofs and garages and breeding. Setting up bait stations along the boundary in autumn, before they move in, is far easier and cheaper than clearing them out later.

A tip for Irene properties

Keep a mowed strip along the boundary that faces open land. Rodents prefer to travel under cover, so short grass and a clear edge between the field and your wall make your property less attractive as a stop.

How we work

We inspect the house, garden and outbuildings before treating anything. Our insect treatments are odourless and non-staining, and you won't need to move out. Keep children and pets off treated areas until dry. For homes near open land, we often suggest ongoing rodent monitoring rather than a single treatment.

What does it cost?

It depends on the size of the property, the pest and how close you are to open land, which affects how many bait stations and follow-up visits are needed. A single mole problem or wasp nest is a smaller job. Termite treatment depends on the size of the building and how much timber is involved. We quote after inspecting, and if a sealed feed bin and a mowed boundary would do the job, we'll say so.

Questions we get asked

Why do I get more mice in autumn?

Field mice breed in the grass during summer. When it dries out and nights cool, they move towards buildings for warmth and food.

Do you treat older homes for termites without damage?

Yes. We treat the soil around and beneath the structure and use baiting where drilling isn't practical, so damage to floors and walls is kept to a minimum.

Are field mice different from house mice?

They're different species, but both will come indoors in cold weather. The treatment and prevention are much the same.

Can you help with flies from a nearby farm?

We can reduce them around your home by treating resting sites and helping you clear breeding spots on your property. We can't treat neighbouring land.

Is mole treatment safe for pets?

Yes, when done correctly. We place treatments where pets can't get at them and tell you what to watch for.

How do I keep rodents away from my chicken coop?

Store feed in sealed containers, collect spilled feed daily and keep bait stations outside the coop where chickens can't reach them.
