Crawling insects get into Brooklyn houses mostly at ground level: through gaps under old doors, cracks in plaster and floors, around pipes and drains, and along skirting that has pulled away from the wall. Effective control means treating the cracks and voids where they hide, putting a barrier around the outside of the building and closing the routes in. Spraying the open floor achieves very little.
What counts as a crawling insect?
We use the term for the ground-level pests that walk rather than fly into your home. In Brooklyn the main ones are:
- Cockroaches, both the small German kind in kitchens and the large American kind from drains
- Ants, trailing in from nests under paving and tree roots
- Fishmoths, in bookshelves, cupboards and stored paper
- Millipedes and centipedes, especially after summer storms
- Crickets and beetles, which wander in from the garden at night
Why old Brooklyn houses let so many in
Building materials move over decades. Floors settle, plaster cracks, door frames shrink and drains crack under tree roots. In a house that was built a long time ago and has been renovated in stages, there are often gaps where old work meets new. Converted homes used as offices add more: cabling and data lines drilled through walls, extra plumbing for new bathrooms and kitchenettes, and air-conditioning pipes punched through the outside walls. Each opening is a route in, and many are hidden behind furniture or units.
Outside, Brooklyn's gardens supply the crawlers. Leaf litter, deep mulch, compost and old rockeries give them cover right against the foundations.
Our approach: inside, outside and the gaps between
Inside
We use gel baits for cockroaches, placed in the cracks and voids where they shelter, and ant baits along trails so the workers carry them to the nest. In cupboards, behind skirting and in storage areas, we apply an odourless, non-staining residual product to the cracks and voids crawling insects use.
Outside
A barrier treatment around the base of the walls, doorways, patio edges and drain openings stops insects before they reach the house. We pay most attention to the shaded, damp sides of the building, which is where crawlers gather.
The gaps
We point out the openings that need sealing: door sweeps, pipe and cable entries, cracked air bricks, gaps behind kitchen units and broken drain covers. Closing them makes every treatment last longer.
When crawlers are worst
Crawling insect activity rises with the first summer rains. Ants and cockroaches get busier as nights warm up, millipedes and centipedes move after heavy storms, and crickets come towards lights on humid evenings. In the dry winter months most crawlers slow down outside, though cockroaches in heated kitchens carry on regardless. That makes late winter or early spring a good time for a preventive barrier, before the season gets going. For offices with kitchens, a regular service through the year keeps the indoor species in check.
The common mistake
Treating the room where you saw the insect. Crawling insects usually come from somewhere else: the drain, the garden, the next unit, the gap behind the fridge. Spraying a kitchen floor or a bathroom only kills what's in view, while the source keeps supplying more.
A tip for Brooklyn homeowners
Check where every pipe and cable enters your house. In older homes, the holes drilled for them are often far larger than the pipe itself and have never been filled. A tube of sealant and some steel wool around those gaps, especially under the kitchen sink and behind the washing machine, closes some of the busiest insect routes in the house.
What does crawling insect control cost?
It depends on the size of the house, how many species are involved, whether an outside barrier is needed and whether there's a follow-up. A home with ants and a few cockroaches is a quick, modest job. A large house or an office in a converted building with kitchens and archives takes longer, and may be better on a regular service. If it's only the odd beetle or cricket, sealing gaps and fixing outside lights may be enough without any treatment.

Questions we get asked
Do you treat several crawling insects at once?
Yes. One visit can cover cockroaches, ants, fishmoths, millipedes and other crawlers, with the right method for each.
Why do crawling insects keep getting into my old house?
Older homes have more gaps: worn door seals, cracked floors and plaster, large holes around pipes. Sealing them is as important as the treatment.
Will the treatment stain floors or skirting?
No. We use odourless, non-staining products, applied to cracks, voids and outside walls rather than open surfaces.
Do I need to empty my cupboards?
Sometimes, if they're a hiding place. We'll tell you before the visit which cupboards, if any, need clearing.
Is it safe for children and pets?
Yes, once dry. Keep children and pets away from treated surfaces until then. Baits are placed out of reach.
How long does the outside barrier last?
It gives protection for a period, but rain, gardening and new mulch wear it down. We can advise when to renew it.
