Pest control for Capital Park homes

Itchy ankles, scratching in the roof, mosquitoes at dusk. In Capital Park, a lot of pest problems start with the things people love about their homes: pets, birds and big gardens.

If you're being bitten at home in Capital Park, it's most likely fleas, bird mites or mosquitoes, and each one needs a different fix. If something is moving in the roof, it's almost always rodents, and the pet food in the garage is often what brought them. Here's how to tell what you're dealing with, and what we do about it.

Capital Park in brief

Capital Park is one of the older Moot suburbs, with established houses and big trees. Plenty of homes here have dogs and cats, gardens that birds love, and roofs with the kind of gaps that only come with age. That combination drives most of what we see.

Start with the symptom

"I'm getting bitten around the ankles"

That's the classic flea pattern. Fleas jump from the floor, so bites cluster on the lower legs. Pets bring them in, and the eggs drop into carpets, pet beds and the gaps between floorboards. Treating the pet alone won't do it, because most of the flea population is in the house, not on the animal. We treat floors, carpets and pet sleeping areas, and your vet treats the pets at the same time. Our flea control in Brooklyn and nearby suburbs explains how we time the follow-up.

"I'm getting bitten at night, and I can see tiny moving dots"

That's usually bird mites. Pigeons, mynas and sparrows nest in roofs and gutters, and when the chicks leave, their mites come down into the house looking for a new host. They're tiny, fast and often show up on walls near ceilings and windows. We find and deal with the nest and treat the areas around it.

"It's mosquitoes every summer evening"

Mosquitoes breed in standing water. In older gardens that means pond edges, blocked gutters, pot saucers, birdbaths, old tyres and buckets. Clearing these is the biggest single step. Where that isn't enough, we treat the shady places mosquitoes rest during the day. For the bigger picture, see biting insect control across Pretoria.

"There's something running in the roof"

Rats or mice. Dog pellets left out overnight, open bags of bird seed and fallen fruit are a food supply, and an older roof gives them a warm place to live. We bait in lockable stations that pets can't open, trap in the roof, and show you the gaps they're using. More on that in rodent control for Brooklyn and the older suburbs.

How we treat with pets in the house

  • Bait stations are tamper-resistant, so dogs and cats can't reach the bait.
  • Floor treatments for fleas are odourless and non-staining. Keep pets out until they're dry, then let them back in.
  • Fish tanks should be covered and the pump switched off during a spray treatment nearby.
  • Bird feeders are fine to keep, but move them away from the house and clean up spilt seed.

The mistake we see most

Treating the dog for fleas, seeing the scratching stop for a week, and calling it done. Flea pupae in the carpet keep hatching for weeks after, and the dog picks them up again. You need the pet and the house treated together, then a follow-up a few weeks later to catch the late hatchers.

A Capital Park tip

Feed pets indoors or pick up the bowls at night, and store pellets and bird seed in a metal or hard plastic bin with a tight lid. It's the single cheapest way to cut rodent visits in an older suburb, and it helps with ants and cockroaches too.

How a visit works

We start by working out what's biting or what's in the roof. Then we check the roof space where there's safe access, the pet areas, the garden and the gutters. Treatment follows the cause, and we book a follow-up where the pest needs one. You don't need to leave home for normal treatments.

What does it cost?

It depends on the pest and the size of the job. Fleas through a whole house with a follow-up cost more than a single room. Bird mites depend on how easy the nest is to reach. Rodents depend on the number of stations and visits. We'll quote after the inspection, and if a vet treatment and a good vacuum will do it, we'll say so.

Questions we get asked

Can I get fleas even if I don't have pets?

Yes. Previous occupants' pets, stray cats under the house, or rodents in the roof can all bring fleas. The bites look the same.

How do I tell bird mites from fleas?

Flea bites are mostly on the ankles and lower legs. Bird mites bite anywhere and are often seen as tiny moving dots on walls, ceilings and bedding.

Is the flea treatment safe for my dog?

Yes, once the treated floors are dry. Keep your dog out of treated rooms until then, and use a vet-recommended product on the dog itself.

Why do I need a follow-up for fleas?

Flea pupae are protected from treatment and keep hatching for some weeks. A follow-up catches them before they can lay more eggs.

Do bird feeders attract rats?

Spilt seed under a feeder does. Keep feeders away from the house, clean up spilt seed and store bird food in a sealed bin.

Can you treat mosquitoes for a garden party?

We can treat the resting areas around the house and garden ahead of time. Clearing standing water a week or two before makes the biggest difference.
