Good insect control starts with identification. Two insects that look alike to most people can need completely different treatments, and the wrong one wastes money and time. In Garsfontein homes, schools and shops we see the full range, from cockroaches in kitchens and ants after storms to fishmoths in cupboards, fleas from pets, flies at the bins and wasps under the eaves. We work out what you have, why it's there, and then treat only what needs treating.
How the year looks in Garsfontein
The Highveld seasons shape which insects show up and when. Here's a rough guide based on what families in the suburb typically call us about:
- Spring (September to November): ants on the move, the first wasp queens starting nests, and flying termites with the first big storm.
- Summer (December to February): peak season for flies, mosquitoes, fleas, big cockroaches from drains, millipedes after rain and wasp nests reaching full size.
- Autumn (March to May): cockroaches and ants still active indoors, moles in watered lawns, and insects looking for warm hiding places.
- Winter (June to August): quieter outside, but German cockroaches carry on in warm kitchens, fishmoths in cupboards, and harvester termites are at their busiest in dry lawns.
Homes, complexes and businesses
Family homes
Most home visits are for one or two specific insects. We inspect, find the source, and choose the treatment: cockroaches are gel-baited where they hide, ant colonies are reached with bait the workers carry home, crawling insects coming in from the garden are stopped with a residual barrier, and wasps get a direct nest treatment. Nobody needs to leave home for any of these. The only precaution is keeping little ones and animals away from anything sprayed while it dries.
Townhouse complexes
Insects move between units through shared walls, plumbing and roof spaces, so we work with bodies corporate on block or whole-complex treatments where that makes more sense than treating one unit at a time.
Schools, shops and offices
Garsfontein's schools and shopping centres deal with food, waste and large numbers of people. A scheduled monitoring contract gives you regular inspections, treatment as needed, and a written record of every visit. That's useful for hygiene audits, for reassuring parents and for keeping problems small.
For estates and complexes, we can also look at the common areas: guardhouses, refuse rooms, clubhouses and the gardens maintained by the body corporate. Pests in those spaces feed the problems residents see in their own units, so including them gives everyone better results.
Is it something you can handle yourself?
Often, yes. A single trail of ants, a few fishmoths in a bathroom or a small wasp nest at the very start of the season can be managed with good housekeeping and the right product from a hardware store. We'll tell you honestly when that's the case. What's worth calling us for is anything that keeps coming back, anything spreading between rooms or units, bites you can't explain, and any insect near food in a business.
The mistake we see most
Using one all-purpose insect spray for everything. It's convenient, but it scatters cockroaches deeper into cupboards, splits ant colonies, and contaminates bait if we've already put some down. It also leaves residue on surfaces in a house with toddlers crawling on the floor. Targeted treatment uses less product in the right places.
A tip for Garsfontein households
Before you call, if you can, catch a specimen. Put it in a clean jar or press a piece of clear tape over it, or take a sharp photo from above with a coin next to it for scale. It saves time, helps us bring the right products, and quite often lets us tell you over WhatsApp that it's harmless.
What does insect control cost?
It depends entirely on which insect, how many areas are affected and the size of the property. A single kitchen treatment for German cockroaches costs less than a full perimeter treatment for crawling insects around a big house, and a school or shopping centre contract is priced on the site and the visit schedule. We'll give you a clear quote once we know what we're treating.
If it's crawling, have a look at crawling insect treatment in Garsfontein, and if it flies, our Garsfontein flying insect service covers flies, mosquitoes and wasps. The bigger city picture is on insect control across Pretoria. We cover the neighbouring suburb of Moreleta Park too, and the full Garsfontein list is on our local pest control page.
We've been treating insects for 25 years and are SAPCA registered, with a 3-month guarantee on every treatment. Phone 012 012 5526 to book. Or start with a WhatsApp picture of the insect and let us name it for you.
Questions we get asked
What if I don't know what insect I have?
Send us a photo or catch one in a jar. Identifying it first is the most important step, and we can often tell you straight away what it is.
Do you do general spraying of the whole house?
We prefer targeted treatment matched to the insect, because it works better and uses less product. A perimeter barrier treatment is used where crawling insects are coming in from outside.
Is insect treatment safe for babies and pets?
Yes, with simple precautions. Babies, children and animals just need to wait until sprayed areas have dried, and baits go in places they can't reach.
Can you treat a school during term?
Yes. We plan visits around the school day where we can, and use methods suited to classrooms, kitchens and tuck shops.
How often should a business have insect control?
That depends on the type of business. Food businesses and schools usually benefit from regular scheduled visits; offices may need less often.
Does the guarantee cover all insects?
It applies to whichever insect we treated. Should that insect return inside the three-month period, we come out again and sort it.
