If you or your family keep waking up with bites, or get bitten every time you sit outside, the first job is to identify what's biting. In Waterkloof homes it's usually one of four: mosquitoes, fleas, bed bugs or bird mites. Each lives somewhere different and needs a completely different treatment, so guessing wrong wastes time and money. We look for the evidence, confirm the culprit and treat its source.
Clues that point to each one
Mosquitoes
Bites on exposed skin, mostly at dusk or at night, with a whine around your ears. Worse in summer and near water. In Waterkloof gardens, ponds, bird baths, water features and blocked gutters under big trees are the common breeding sites.
Fleas
Small bites clustered around ankles and lower legs, often in homes with dogs or cats, or after returning to a house that's been closed up. Pets scratching is a strong clue. Shaded spots where dogs lie in the garden are frequent sources.
Bed bugs
Bites in lines or clusters on arms, shoulders and neck, appearing overnight. Look for small dark spots and shed skins on mattress seams and headboards. Often linked to recent travel or guests.
Bird mites
Very itchy bites and a crawling feeling at night, with tiny moving specks on walls or ceilings. Usually concentrated in one room, below a bird nest in the roof, gutter or eaves that has recently gone quiet.
Spider bites, particularly from sac spiders, are another possibility for an isolated bite found in the morning.
Why the setting matters in Waterkloof
The suburb's large gardens, water features and mature trees support mosquitoes and birds. Older roofs with gaps provide nesting sites, and with them bird mites. Many households keep several dogs, which raises flea pressure in the garden. And with many residents who travel or host overseas guests, bed bugs arrive in luggage more often than people expect. Any of these can turn up in a well-kept home, and none of them reflects on hygiene.
How we track it down
- Ask the right questions. Where on the body, which rooms, what time of day, any pets, recent travel, any bird activity in the roof.
- Inspect. Beds and furniture for bed bugs, carpets and pet areas for fleas, roof spaces and gutters for nests, the garden for standing water.
- Treat the source. Bed and room treatment with follow-up for bed bugs; carpets, pet bedding and shaded garden areas for fleas, alongside your vet's pet treatment; nest and room treatment for bird mites; breeding-site removal and resting-area treatment for mosquitoes.
- Prevent a repeat with practical changes to roofing, luggage habits, water features or pet care.
When it isn't an insect at all
Every now and then, a thorough inspection finds no fleas, bed bugs, mites or mosquitoes, yet the bites or itching continue. In that case, it's worth thinking about other causes: a reaction to a new washing powder, dry Highveld winter skin, plant contact in the garden, or a medical issue. We'll tell you honestly if we can't find an insect, rather than treating the house just in case. It's not the answer anyone wants, but it stops you spending money on treatments that won't help, and it's worth raising with a doctor.
What people commonly get wrong
Treating for the wrong insect. We often see homes that have been sprayed for fleas when the problem was bird mites from a nest above the bedroom, or a mattress thrown out for bed bugs when the bites were mosquitoes. Identifying the culprit first is the cheapest step in the whole process.
A local tip
Keep a simple note for a few nights: where the bites are, which room you slept in, and whether they're worse after time in the garden. Together with a photo of any insect or speck you find, that note usually narrows it down before we even arrive.
What does it cost?
It depends entirely on what's biting. Mosquito source removal and treatment, flea treatment of a house and garden, bird mite nest treatment and a full bed bug treatment with follow-up are very different jobs. Once we've identified the cause, we'll explain the options and quote. Sometimes the answer is free, such as tipping out water or changing the dog's bedding regularly.

Questions we get asked
How can I tell what's biting me?
Look at where and when you're bitten. Ankles suggest fleas, lines on arms and shoulders suggest bed bugs, exposed skin at dusk suggests mosquitoes, and itchy bites with tiny specks on the ceiling suggest bird mites.
Can I be bitten by fleas if I don't have pets?
Yes. Fleas can come from previous owners' pets, visiting cats, or rodents and birds on the property.
Why am I the only one in the house getting bitten?
People react differently. Some show no marks from bites at all, so one person can seem to be the only target when others are being bitten too.
Should I see a doctor about the bites?
If bites become infected, cause severe swelling or you feel unwell, yes. For ordinary itchy bites, finding and removing the cause is the main fix.
Can one treatment cover all biting insects?
No. Each one lives in a different place, so the treatment has to match the insect. That's why we identify it first.
