If you live near the Wonderboom Nature Reserve and you're dealing with rats, scorpions, wasps or tiny mites biting you at night, you want them gone without poisoning the birds and animals that are part of why you live here. That's how we work here: careful identification, targeted treatment and lockable bait stations instead of loose poison. Here's what we see and how we handle it.
Living next to the veld
Wonderboom sits on the northern side of Pretoria near the Magaliesberg ridge and the nature reserve, with freestanding homes and complexes. Rocky ground, open grassland and trees on one side and gardens on the other mean animals move freely between the two. Most of that is a pleasure. A few of them become a problem once they're in the roof, under the eaves or in the bedroom.
The four problems that come up most
1. Rats and mice
Rodents from the veld move towards houses as the nights turn cold. They nest in roofs, garages and wall cavities. Loose poison is the wrong answer here, because a poisoned rat in the open can be eaten by an owl, a mongoose or the neighbour's cat. We use lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations placed along rodent runs, traps inside the roof, and proofing advice so new rats don't follow. Our rodent control in Montana and the north explains the approach.
2. Scorpions and spiders
Rocky slopes and stone walls are prime scorpion country. They come in under doors and through weep holes on warm nights. We treat the hiding places and put a barrier around the house rather than spraying the whole garden.
3. Wasps
Paper wasps build under eaves and patio roofs, and you'll occasionally find a bigger nest in a tree or shed. We treat the nest itself, which leaves bees and other insects in the garden alone. Read more about wasp nest treatment across Pretoria.
4. Bird mites
This one surprises people. Pigeons, mynas, sparrows and other birds nest in roofs, gutters and under solar panels. When the chicks leave, the mites that lived on them go looking for a new host, and come down through the ceiling into the house. The result is tiny, fast-moving specks on walls and bedding, and itchy bites at night. Treating the bedroom alone won't fix it. We find the nest, deal with it and treat the area around it. See bird mite treatment in the north for more.
How we keep it wildlife-friendly
- Bait goes inside locked stations, never loose on the ground or in the roof.
- We treat the nest or the entry point, not the whole garden.
- Residual sprays are used around the house where pests come in, are odourless and don't stain.
- We don't remove snakes. For those, call a registered snake handler.

A mistake we see near the reserve
People block a roof gap while birds are still nesting inside, or knock out an old nest and leave it in the gutter. Either way, the mites are released into the roof and head for the house. Have the nest dealt with properly, then close the gap.
One tip for Wonderboom homes
Check your roof line every spring. Gaps under the first row of tiles, open fascia boards and the space under solar panels are where birds nest and rodents get in. Fitting bird mesh or closing these gaps before the breeding season stops two problems at once.
How a visit works
We book a time, then inspect the roof space, eaves, garage and garden. We confirm what the pest is, because a lot of bites blamed on bed bugs turn out to be bird mites. Then we treat, explain what you can do to keep it from coming back, and book a follow-up where the job needs one. You can stay at home throughout. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until dry.
What does it cost?
It depends on what we're treating and how much of the property is involved. A single wasp nest is a small job. Rodents across a big stand with a roof to trap, or bird mites that need the roof and bedrooms treated, cost more. We quote after the inspection, and we'll tell you when a simple fix is all you need.
Wonderboom falls in our northern area, covered on the Montana pest control page. SAPCA registered, 25 years in business, and a 3-month guarantee on what we treat: that's what you get when you call us. Call 012 012 5526, or WhatsApp us a photo of the mites, the nest or the droppings.
Questions we get asked
Will your rat bait harm owls and other wildlife?
We keep bait inside lockable stations and use traps inside roofs, which keeps the risk to owls, mongooses and pets as low as we can make it. Loose poison is never used.
What are the tiny specks biting me at night?
In homes near trees and open ground, it's often bird mites from a nest in the roof or gutter. They look like moving dust specks. We find the nest and treat the source.
Do you remove snakes?
No. We treat insects, scorpions, spiders and rodents. For snakes, call a registered snake handler.
Do you kill bees as well as wasps?
We treat wasp nests directly. For a bee swarm, a beekeeper who can remove and relocate them is usually the better first call.
Can a scorpion treatment be done without spraying the whole garden?
Yes. We treat the rockeries, walls and other hiding spots near the house and put a barrier around the building, rather than covering the whole garden.
