Sinoville pest control

Living close to the ridges in the north means rocky ground, open veld and the creatures that come with them. Here's what Sinoville homes deal with and how we sort it out.

Found a scorpion in the bath or a big spider on the garage wall? In Sinoville that's not unusual, and it doesn't mean your house is infested. The northern suburbs sit near the Magaliesberg ridge and the Wonderboom Nature Reserve, and rocky, open ground nearby means more visitors from outside than you'd get in an inner suburb. Most of them can be kept out with a barrier treatment and a bit of tidying, and we'll tell you which ones need more than that.

What we find on Sinoville properties

Sinoville is mostly freestanding family homes with gardens, with some complexes in between. The gardens are the key. Rockeries, retaining walls, wood piles, stacked bricks and compost all give shelter to the pests that end up indoors. Here's the list, roughly in order of how often people ask us about them.

Scorpions

Scorpions hide under rocks, paving slabs and loose bark by day and hunt at night. They come indoors under doors, through weep holes and gaps around pipes, especially on warm summer nights. The ones most people find are not usually dangerous, but a sting is painful and nobody wants them near the kids. Our scorpion control in Montana and the north explains how we treat the hiding spots and build a barrier around the house.

Spiders

Rain spiders, wall spiders and the odd baboon spider near open ground. Most are harmless and eat other insects, so we don't aim to wipe out every spider. We treat where they're a problem: garages, eaves, outside lights and the places where they come in.

Rats and mice

From late autumn, rodents from the veld move closer to houses for food and warmth. Garages with pet food and bird seed are the first place they settle. See mouse control in the Montana area if it's the smaller droppings you're finding.

Harvester termites

Dry Highveld winters leave Sinoville lawns exposed. Bare patches with small holes and loose soil are the sign.

Wasps

Paper wasps build under eaves, in the folds of garage doors and inside empty pot plants. We remove and treat the nest itself.

What to look for

  • Scorpions in baths, basins and shoes. They climb in and can't climb out of smooth surfaces.
  • Webs gathering around outside lights. Lights draw insects, insects draw spiders.
  • Small droppings on garage shelves, chewed bags of dog food or bird seed.
  • Cut grass and small holes in the lawn in May to August.
  • Wasps flying in and out of the same corner of the roof.

How we treat a Sinoville home

We start in the garden, because that's where most of these pests live. We look at rockeries, walls, wood piles, paving edges and the gaps under doors, then check inside. Treatment is targeted: an odourless, non-staining residual barrier around the outside of the house and in the entry points for scorpions and spiders, lockable bait stations for rodents, nest treatment for wasps, and a lawn treatment for harvester termites. You can stay at home. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry.

The mistake we see most

Clearing out a rockery or a pile of old bricks by hand, in summer, without gloves. That's exactly where scorpions are, and a lot of stings happen during garden clean-ups. Wear thick gloves, use a spade, and move things slowly. Better still, have the area treated first.

A tip for homes near the ridge

Fit brush strips or rubber seals to the bottom of outside doors, especially the kitchen and garage doors. Scorpions and spiders can squeeze through a gap far smaller than you'd expect, and a seal costs very little. Switch outside lights to warm-coloured bulbs too. They attract fewer insects, so fewer spiders hunt around your doors.

What does it cost?

A perimeter treatment for scorpions and spiders on a normal family home is a modest job. The price goes up with the size of the property, how much rockery and walling needs treating, and whether rodents or lawn termites are added in. We'll quote after looking. If you've seen one spider in the garage, you don't need us. If you're finding scorpions indoors every week, you do.

Sinoville sits in our northern area, and the full list of what we do nearby is on the Montana pest control page. Neighbours in Annlin see much the same mix. Want to know more about spiders in general? Read about spider control across Pretoria.

We've been at this for 25 years, we're SAPCA registered, and if a treated pest comes back within three months, we come back too. Call 012 012 5526, or WhatsApp us a photo of the scorpion or spider and we'll tell you what it is.

Questions we get asked

Are the scorpions in Sinoville dangerous?

Most scorpions found in northern Pretoria gardens give a painful sting rather than a dangerous one. As a rough rule, thick-tailed scorpions with small pincers are the ones to be more careful of. If anyone is stung and feels unwell, get medical help.

Will a treatment get rid of every spider?

No, and it shouldn't. We reduce spiders in and around the house and treat where they're a nuisance, but spiders in the garden help keep other insects down.

Why do scorpions end up in the bath?

They come in looking for moisture or prey and climb into baths and basins, then can't get back up the smooth sides. It's a sign they're getting in under a door or through a gap nearby.

Can you treat a wasp nest high under the eaves?

Yes. We treat and remove nests under eaves, carports and patio roofs. Don't knock it down yourself, especially during the day when the wasps are active.

Do you treat complexes in Sinoville too?

Yes. For complexes we can treat the shared gardens and walls as well as individual units, which works better for scorpions and rodents.
